Mild, pleasant and slightly spicy, German Spalt is regarded as a traditional noble aroma hop. Providing a distinct hoppy flavor, Spalt is often utilized in lager, pilsner, bock, kölsch, and Munich helles.
With flavors and aromas described as tea, barrique, ripe bananas, tonka beans and woodruff, German Spalt hops provide the classic earthy qualities of the varietal in styles such as alt bier and German dark lager.
Typical A.A: 2.5 – 5.5%
Possible substitutions: Saaz, Tettnang, Select
Application Tip:
As an alternative to Tettnang or Saaz, Spalt often provides bittering in American pilsners, Munich helles, maibock and kolsch styles. For an earthy quality in Alt bier, add the hops to the kettle with 15 minutes remaining and ferment with German ale yeast, Wyeast 1007.
